took off the alternator and fan to check the bearings and fan and now my shroud won't seat properly. seems to be rocking on the back near the oil cooler. do I have to pull the motor? spent 3 hours on it so far. oh and its a 1600dp w/dual carbs.

Hard to tell without seeing, but make sure the entire fan shroud is seated correctly in the cylinder tin area. I have had the shroud not "seat" correctly and had problems similar.

Good luck

I would guess that it's hanging up on the back side of the cyl head tin.

i need to buy a mechanics mirror....can't see back behind to save my life.
now what do I do about the coil. I have two ugly holes in the front of the shroud and can't get to the back side to fasten the coil. i would re position but still have those ugly holes.

IS it a doghouse cooler? Its hard to diagnose via the internet. However, If it is a doghouse, then the cooler should seat in the fan shroud itself. It may not be seating because the padding in the shroud maybe in the way. Also, did you accidentally loosen the cooler?

I don't think I did. all I did was take off the alternator from the shroud. the shroud was not attached to the engine tin. the oil cooler is attached to the back though. it seems to be hanging up somewhere near the center rear. but i can't see it and my hands are too big to go feeling around back there. i found out tonight if i had bought a couple of moly screws for the coil bracket i could have avoided all this trouble. but i think i am going to run down to kragen on monday and get a new r/b 55amp alt.

The shroud should be attached to the engine tin via 1 screw on each side. When you moved the tin, did you remove any of the doghouse set-up? If any part of the set-up isnt almost perfect, welcome to paininthe@$$ville: population: you. I know the duct work goes through the firewall tin, which in turn connects to the shroud itself. You need a good mirror and light to look, or if all else fails, drop the engine. Wish I was up there to give you a hand. Also, the shroud loves to seat outside of the engine tin (it should lin up inside the groove, but it loves to line up outside). You may also want to lift it up a little and try to re-seat it OR look down behind there.
